Robert Rodriguez (2001)

U Certificate

Our Score
This was a startling choice for director Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn) - a junior-league "James Bond" adventure - but the result is rollicking good fun for youngsters and adults alike. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino play married spies who get captured by a megalomaniac children's TV presenter (Alan Cumming) who's seeking world domination by replacing the children of people in high places with lookalike robots. To the rescue come the couple's pleasingly non-precocious offspring (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara), aided and abetted by a cool array of gizmos that range from rocket-packs to electromagnetic chewing gum. There are some nifty special effects, fine performances from the likes of Robert Patrick and a cameoing George Clooney, and it's smartly and sassily directed by Rodriguez (who quite rightly pitches the film at youngsters, not down to them). SPYkids is family entertainment as it should be.

A megalomaniac threatens to take over the world, so two married spies come out of retirement to thwart his plans. However, when they go missing, it is up to their plucky children to step in and save the day. Family adventure directed by Robert Rodriguez, starring Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alan Cumming, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara.
