In this western, Universal's new find Rock Hudson, loaned out here to Columbia, stars as a rancher whose fiancée (Donna Reed) is suddenly abducted. The film boasts a moody plot that pits the gauche, honest and upright Hudson against baddie Phil Carey (who's outstanding) and his gang (including Lee Marvin). This exciting psychological western was originally filmed in the novelty of 3D (though released without the 3D gimmick in the UK), and one wonders whether director Raoul Walsh had encouraged inexperienced star Hudson to overproject his acting. There seems to be no other reason, as in the previous year's The Lawless Breed Hudson gave a beautifully controlled performance for the same director.
