Our Score
Hollywood stars never faded, they simply made films in Britain. That used to be the case for, among others, Joan Fontaine, who here reprises her "frightened lady" turn, first seen in Rebecca, as the cursed schoolmistress discovering devil worship in rural parts. It's a Hammer that never quite makes contact with your nerves, even though it's written by Nigel Kneale, who created Quatermass. At least director Cyril Frankel treats it as though it mattered, but for Fontaine it signalled her career's end.

Summary

A teacher goes to Africa to work at a missionary school, but has a traumatic encounter with a local witch doctor that drives her to a nervous breakdown. She returns to teach in a quiet English village, only to suspect a coven of witches is performing dark rituals - a claim that leads people to suspect she is going mad. Hammer horror, starring Joan Fontaine and Kay Walsh.
