Helen Mirren is the driving force behind this powerful tale that looks at the Irish Troubles from a mother's viewpoint. Mirren plays a widowed teacher who is shocked to discover that her son (played by Aidan Gillen) is involved with the IRA, and whose anxiety is further heightened when he joins a prison protest. Director Terry George makes no secret of whose side he's on, but this is primarily Mirren's show, as she gives a poignant portrayal of universal motherhood.

A teacher in 1980s Northern Ireland has the conflict brought home to her when her son is arrested as a member of the IRA. Through her friendship with the mother of another prisoner, her sympathy for the IRA's agenda grows, although she struggles to condone their use of violence. However, her new allegiances are tested when her son joins the hunger strike led by Bobby Sands. Drama, starring Helen Mirren, Aidan Gillen, Fionnula Flanagan and John Lynch.
