Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Love is never easy, as a devoted single-sex couple discovers, in this poignant romantic comedy from Ira Sachs. After 39 years together, artist Ben (John Lithgow) and teacher George (Alfred Molina) decide to get married, but news of their union brings about unemployment and then homelessness. As the newlyweds struggle to find a new home in the overheated property market of New York City, they look to friends and family to put them up, with George staying on the sofa of a gay cop couple and Ben sharing a house with a novelist (Marisa Tomei), her husband and their teenage son. The story does wander a bit, but Lithgow and Molina turn in nuanced and realistic performances as the chalk-and-cheese pair. Heartening, heart-warming and heartbreaking, Love Is Strange is a road trip through a durable, fascinating romance.
