Until Wes Craven dragged his seminal Nightmare on Elm Street saga into another realm altogether with his re-energised New Nightmare (1994), the series had ground to a tired halt. Director Rachel Talalay's gimmick-laden sixth instalment about the child-murdering dream-stalker's exploits in nightmare land is a virtual rehash of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, with an astonishingly lame 3D climax tacked on. Roseanne Barr (billed here as Mrs Tom Arnold), Johnny Depp (who starred in the original) and Alice Cooper make cameo appearances to little effect in a ho-hum blending of reality and surrealism. Only for those in the right state of mindlessness.
