Holy Smoke

Holy Smoke

Jane Campion (1999)

18 Certificate

Our Score
After the class-crossing passion of Titanic and her emergence as a star, Kate Winslet lets her hair down (and a lot more besides) in this lampoon on Australian bigotry from Jane Campion. Winslet plays Ruth, the daughter of a poor family from Sydney, who becomes a disciple of an Indian guru. Fearful of his influence over her, Ruth's family hires an American "exit counsellor" and cult buster (Harvey Keitel), who takes her to the outback and tries to break her spirit. Both funny and dramatic, this Smoke really does get in your eyes.

An Australian woman embraces the teachings of a guru during a trip to India, and becomes a fully fledged follower. Fearing she has been brainwashed, her family hires a cult specialist to deprogramme her, but it soon becomes apparent he needs more help than his patient. Satirical drama, directed by Jane Campion and starring Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel, Julie Hamilton, Sophie Lee and Daniel Wyllie.
