Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The first-world problems of a directionless, well-to-do daddy's girl are made palatable by the casting of Keira Knightley in this melancholy but ultimately rather traditional indie comedy. Knightley stars as a likeable drifter in her late 20s who lives with her high-school sweetheart and has yet to commit to any kind of adult responsibility. After an upsetting experience at a friend's wedding, Knightley encounters 16-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz and her gang, striking up a friendship that becomes deeper when Knightley hides out at the girl's home while pretending to attend a life-management seminar. Unlikely as it sounds, there's a refreshing innocence and intimacy to this pairing that really charms. But when the romantic comedy formula kicks in - Knightley meets Moretz's diffident but dishy single dad (Sam Rockwell) - all nuance goes out of the window, leaving little to distinguish Say When from any of its more mainstream contemporaries.
