A young man's recently deceased girlfriend mysteriously returns from the dead, but he slowly realizes she is not the way he remembered her.
Just as the zombie genre refuses to die, this fitfully funny and well cast black comedy doesn't know when to stop either. Its lack of originality isn't really an issue, since the premise - high-school student Zach (Dane DeHaan) realises his girlfriend Beth (the excellent Aubrey Plaza) has returned from the grave - has its roots in myriad romantic horror comedies, from 1942's I Married A Witch onwards. And as a metaphor for fickle young relationships it works very well, too, as the once puppyish Zach grows out of love with the decomposing, erratic and increasingly clingy Beth. Somehow, though, the glorious zomcom this could have been never materialises; instead, we have an aimless, gory farce that pauses frequently for moments of shouty hysteria, as Zach finds out the hard way that eternal love isn't all it's cracked up to be.
