Our Score
The best Steven Spielberg film you've never heard of, this TV movie stars Sandy Dennis and Darren McGavin as a couple who move their family to a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. But Dennis's countryside idyll of baking, flower arranging and craft projects soon gives way to disturbing noises and things going bump in the night, as the house takes on a sinister aspect and the couple's young son begins to change. It all sounds a bit clichéd - until you realise the film was made a year before The Exorcist, four years before The Omen, and seven years before The Amityville Horror. The TV-movie budget and time constraints mean everything feels a bit rushed, while the effects are definitely of the cheap and cheerful variety. However, Dennis's excellent performance as a mother pushed to the edge gives the film real power and Spielberg shows off some inventive camerawork and sound design, which gives a hint of the career that was to follow.

A woman moves to a rural farm with her family and develops an interest in the occult based on strange designs found around the property. A series of unexplained events leads her to believe demonic forces are dwelling in the house and have designs on her son. Horror directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Sandy Dennis and Darren McGavin.
