One Christmas

One Christmas

Tony Bill (1994)

Our Score
At last, a festive tale with a nasty bite, even if its teeth are extracted for a happy ending. Based on Truman Capote's story, this 1930s-set drama follows the adventures of a young country boy who is expecting the perfect Christmas with his estranged father (Henry Winkler) when he visits him in New Orleans. However, Dad is not only an alcoholic but also a gigolo who sees his son as just another means to fleece wealthy widows. Director Tony Bill provides a sharp and witty dissection of the Christmas experience, and Winkler is unexpectedly good cast against type, but he is upstaged by top-billed Katharine Hepburn and an experienced supporting cast, which includes Swoosie Kurtz, Pat Hingle and Julie Harris.
