Dead Calm

Dead Calm

Phillip Noyce (1988)

15 Certificate

Our Score
Nicole Kidman and director Phillip Noyce were catapulted into the Hollywood frontline by this scary revel. It's an ingenious psychological thriller in the grand Hitchcock tradition, with a very simple premise: a couple (Kidman and Sam Neill) decide to take a yachting trip to try to recover from the death of their young son, but when they rescue the sole survivor (Billy Zane) from a sinking schooner, things take a very nasty turn. But, when Noyce expertly cranks up the tension to fever pitch you'll be screaming with delicious panic at one of the best ocean-going shockers since Jaws.

A husband and wife take a yachting trip to help recover from the death of their son. While out on the open water the couple spot a sinking ship and manage to save the only person left on board - but they come to bitterly regret their good deed when the situation turns dark and a fraught battle of wits ensues. Thriller, based on a novel by Charles Williams, with Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane.
