The two sides of director John Singleton's haphazard career - Boyz N the Hood social concern and Shaft blaxploitation - unite in this tough revenge drama that consistently remains engaging while spinning headlong into preposterousness. Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and André Benjamin play the hard-nut foster brothers who precariously reunite at their activist mother's funeral to bring her murderers to justice. Benjamin delivers the subtlest performance as the only married sibling, whose business dealings may be the cause of Mob boss Chiwetel Ejiofor's puzzling vendetta. The spectacular action scenes include a sliding car chase through a blinding snowstorm, a frenzied street shoot-out and a brutal climax on a frozen lake - all choreographed to a golden oldie Motown soundtrack. It's fast, it's furious, it's ultimately sentimental and ludicrous but Singleton's loose remake of The Sons of Katie Elder hits the slick urban western button with proficient glee.
