This sequel may not come with the "Martin Scorsese Presents" seal of approval that helped make the 2010 original a cult hit - but it's every bit as thrilling. Joel Kinnaman once again plays social-climbing JW, and we pick up his story as he leaves prison only to discover that he's been swindled by his business partner on the outside, forcing him back into a life of crime. JW might have been duped by old money, but class actually looms less large as a theme this time around, while the rogue's gallery of supporting cast members lends an abrasive edge to a plot that could otherwise be dismissed as the same old "gangs, drugs and ethnic family values". Remarkably, new director/co-writer Babak Najafi keeps up the energy of the original and juggles interlocking cross/double-cross plotlines with skill, and the returning cinematography/editing double act of Aril Wretblad and Theis Schmidt add an up-close, fast-paced urgency to proceedings.
