Director Katell Quillévéré's feature debut is a sensitive, sensual and surprisingly spiritual account of an adolescent girl's coming of age. Happy to be away from her detested boarding school, Anna (Clara Augarde) arrives at her grandfather's Breton home just as her parents confirm their separation. With her mother (Lio) seeking solace from a local priest (Stefano Cassetti), Anna relies on a choirboy (Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil) to help make sense of her feelings as she prepares for her confirmation. However, there are no easy answers for those facing crises of confidence and conscience. Exquisitely photographed by Tom Harari with graceful camerawork that captures the atmosphere of a sleepy coastal village, this subtly episodic saga is perfectly paced by Quillévéré, whose courageous use of silence, impassivity and nudity makes the flame-haired Augarde's performance all the more remarkable.
