Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Middle-aged anxieties are explored to amusing effect in this insightful, well-observed comedy drama from Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). It follows the exploits of 40-something couple Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, whose lives have become rather stale and unadventurous. Things change, however, with the arrival of Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, a disarming, free-spirited pair in their 20s. As friendship blossoms between the two couples, Baumbach uses the situation to say something about both generations, poking fun at hipsters while making perceptive observations about what it's like to reach a certain point in life. One or two scenes feel like they've wandered in from a slighter broader comedy, but each member of the cast is terrific - Stiller, in particular, has never been better - and the film is filled with witty exchanges. Highly recommended for anyone feeling wistful about their youth.
