Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This animated family film about a zebra just about earns its stripes. It doesn't have the blockbusting production values that have made Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks leaders in the field, but its tale of being born different is decently told and well voiced by a cast that includes Liam Neeson, Steve Buscemi and Catherine Tate. Khumba was born with only half his stripes and on that basis, is blamed by his superstitious herd for the sudden drought that hits their homeland. He promptly goes into exile, searching for a mystical water hole where, legend has it, the first zebras were granted their stripes. Along the way he's helped by a sassy wildebeest (Loretta Devine) and a camp cockney ostrich (Richard E Grant), and hunted by the film's hiss-boo baddie, a one-eyed leopard (Neeson). Khumba isn't original - it's indebted in particular to The Lion King and Madagascar - but younger kids should enjoy the colourful safari.
