Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Thirteen years on from Pixar's Finding Nemo, forgetful Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) is elevated from sidekick status to star of the show, as she goes in search of her missing parents. But the first step to this plucky blue tang fish achieving her goal is remembering that she actually had a mum and dad - not easy when you've a memory span of just a few seconds. Something inside her, however, tells her to make for the coast of California, and with clown fish Nemo and his worrywart father along for support, another sea-going odyssey gets under way. Once again, the imperatives of family reunion give the proceedings genuine emotional heft, but here the visual palette is so much richer than in the original, showing how technology has advanced to deliver wonderfully immersive micro-detailed sub-aquatic vistas and bring to life captivating new characters including a curmudgeonly octopus with chameleon-like powers. The overall level of invention is simply dazzling, the comedy adeptly caters for parents and kids alike, while the story of a little fish learning to triumph over the disability that has thus far defined her sprinkles genuine tears amid the abundant laughter. It's exactly what a great sequel should be - like the original, only better.
