The Glass House

Tom Gries (1972)

15 Certificate

Our Score
Tom Gries had a chequered career: a onetime reporter, he produced B-pics such as Donovan's Brain (1953) before moving into television. Nine years after winning an Emmy for the series East Side/West Side, he won another for this no-nonsense prison drama. Based on a story co-written by Truman Capote, it stars Alan Alda as a college professor who falls foul of hardened lifer Vic Morrow after being jailed for manslaughter. Clu Gulager also impresses as a rookie guard on the maximum security wing. Sadly, Gries died of a heart attack playing tennis while directing Muhammad Ali vehicle The Greatest.

A former college professor launches a campaign for prison reforms while serving time in a harsh maximum security jail for manslaughter. Drama based on a short story by Truman Capote, starring Alan Alda, Vic Morrow, Dean Jagger and Billy Dee Williams.
