After a brutal attack lands her in hospital and leaves her fiancé dead, radio talk-show host Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) is driven to take the law into her own hands. Foster brings real emotional depth to the role, particularly in the first half hour when Erica struggles to step outside her New York apartment. Quite rightly, director Neil Jordan doesn't take short cuts to the point where she finally picks up a gun, but as Erica descends into a spiral of violence, it becomes increasingly difficult to stick with her. Her empathy with an unwitting cop (Terrence Howard) is one of many grating contrivances that lamely serves to justify her actions. The ending is even tougher to swallow. It's a gutsy turn by Foster: what a shame the film-makers lacked the courage to follow through.
