Review

Our Score
This shallow re-imagining of the Snow White fairy tale is another over-embellished and underdeveloped kitsch-fest from Immortals director Tarsem Singh. Julia Roberts is in tired drag-queen mode as the wicked stepmother who steals the kingdom from Snow White (a bland but effective Lily Collins) and sets her sights on a rich and dashing prince (an ill-served Armie Hammer) as her next doomed husband. The seven dwarves are recast as forest-dwelling rebels, led by our plucky heroine in an attempt to win back her birthright and claim the prince's heart. Singh begins his story on an animated note of mischievous self-mockery, but quickly strains under the effort to be consistently funny and visually interesting. Touches such as the queen's "Puppy Love Potion" and extreme beauty treatments are simply off-putting. Paling in comparison to more famous retellings, this minor chintzy fantasy has all the depth of a pop-up storybook.

Summary

The exiled aristocrat joins forces with a band of rebellious dwarfs to reclaim her father's throne and stop the evil queen seducing the prince she is in love with.
