Director Ron Shelton has proved something of a specialist with baseball movies, having also brought Cobb to the big screen, in which Tommy Lee Jones thunders magnificently as the twisted sports star. In this winning comedy drama, Shelton's detailed love of the sport shines through. The result is a smart, witty character piece that eschews the stale sports flick formula, focusing instead on the electric attraction between baseball groupie Susan Sarandon and hot young pitcher Tim Robbins, as old pro Kevin Costner broods convincingly in the wings. All three actors make the picture sizzle.

Plot Summary

Comedy drama starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. For Annie Savoy, baseball is a religion to which she devotes herself body and soul. Every season she selects a promising player on the Durham Bulls team to receive the benefit of her experience. This year, however, her attentions are torn between hot-headed newcomer Ebby LaLoosh and worldly wise veteran Crash Davis.
