Review

Our Score
The Ealing comedies are held among the treasures of British cinema. But for every gem there is at least one poor imitation, packed with cosy caricatures and devoid of the usual satirical bite. This tepid assault on television is from the lower reaches of the latter category. Loosely based on the play Beggar My Neighbour by Arnold Ridley (who starred in Dad's Army as Godfrey), it has Stanley Holloway as a pantomime demon who is sent as an emissary from hell to ensure that TV sets throughout the nation bring nothing but misery. Thanks to any station that chooses to air this sorry offering in the future, his mission is close to being accomplished.

Summary

An actor playing the Devil in a low-rent pantomime is in fact genuinely Lucifer's representative on Earth. He watches over his master's latest evil scheme, as an enchanted TV set passes through the hands of several owners, bringing them all misery. Fantasy comedy based on a stage play by Arnold Ridley, starring Stanley Holloway and Peggy Cummins.
