Review

Oh dear. There’s sadly little to recommend this look at the tumultuous, sozzled romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, overshadowed as it is by the casting of Lindsay Lohan as Taylor. She pouts, she throws bottles, she cries, she has false eyelashes the size of Texas, but she’s simply unable to breathe life into the legendary star. It’s a car crash.

Grant Bowler does marginally better as Burton, although there seems to be little actual chemistry with Lohan. He’s worked very hard on the voice, and his portrayal of an actor who drank away his promise (and was painfully aware of his failure) has some pathos. But the dialogue doesn’t help either of them. When accused by Taylor of staring at her breasts, Burton’s response is: “Why not? It’s everything you promise… love, sex and nurture.”

If you can bear it, hang on to the end, when we see the mid-80s Taylor responding to the news of Burton’s death. Blink and you’ll miss Lohan’s dead faint – it’s a classic.
