This remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1972 thriller reuses much of Walter Hill's original script. It's directed by Roger Donaldson and stars Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger in the roles played originally by Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw. Peckinpah's film now looks rather scrappy, though McQueen's charisma still counts for plenty. Baldwin isn't in the same league as the cool and calculating bank robber, but Donaldson's picture has more flair, and the female leads stand up to comparison. The story (from another of Jim Thompson's bleak novels) has a fair amount of tension, and the southwestern locations have an arid, end-of-the-line symbolism. James Woods and Michael Madsen are a welcome bonus as the double-crossing bad guys.
