A professional assassin finds his life at crisis point when he starts training his mentor's volatile son, in this remake of Michael Winner's 1972 thriller. Jason Statham is an astute choice to take over from Charles Bronson in the title role, and he acquits himself well as the taciturn killer - quiet when he needs to be, suitably fleet-footed when the competent action scenes require it. There are problems elsewhere, however, especially since the story never really made sense the first time round, and a miscast Ben Foster (Jan-Michael Vincent in the original) struggles to find any clarity of purpose as the protégé learning the ropes from an ice-cool loner. Unwisely, director Simon West (Con Air) jettisons the existential musings that made the original a surprisingly thoughtful entry in the Bronson canon and replaces them with Tony Goldwyn's scenery-chewing turn as a covert agency schemer, although Donald Sutherland adds class in his cameo as Statham's ill-fated handler. This is a superficially chic offering, which skips along pacily enough but leaves very little impression.

A professional hitman lets his emotional detachment slip when his mentor is murdered, and puts his deadly skills to the task of getting revenge. The solitary assassin finds an ally in his teacher's son, who also yearns for vengeance and persuades the killer to teach him the tricks of the trade. Action thriller remake, starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland.
