Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This dark, downbeat thriller involves plenty of twists and turns. Adapted from the novel by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), it centres on Libby Day (Charlize Theron), a damaged, hostile 30-something whose mother and sisters were murdered when she was seven years old. In the immediate aftermath, swept along by lawyers and press hounds, she testified that her older brother (Tye Sheridan) was responsible for the murders - and he has been in prison ever since. As an adult, Libby is approached by "Kill Club", an organisation who are interested in solving true crimes and famous murders. Believing that Ben's conviction was a miscarriage of justice, they convince Libby to revisit the events that ruined her life. From here, the story builds towards a series of revelations, most of which are fairly unconvincing. Still, Theron is solid enough in the lead role, and the central mystery is reasonably intriguing before the beans are spilled.
