Mr Jones

Our Score
Here's one Jones that audiences won't want to keep up with, as manic-depressive Richard Gere suffers a Freudian slip-up by having an affair with his psychiatrist, Lena Olin. Gere's mood-swinging hero displays surprising energy and verve, which was probably not the original intention: studio executives ordered extensive recutting in order to lighten up what was by all accounts a rather sombre movie, and the result makes uncomfortable viewing. Director Mike Figgis has since found Oscar-nominated success with 1995's Leaving Las Vegas.

Manic depressive Mr Jones decides the only way he can get a thrill out of life is by courting danger, a habit that lands him in a psychiatric hospital. He has an affair with the doctor treating him, which forces him to reassess his philosophy. Romantic drama, starring Richard Gere, Lena Olin, Anne Bancroft, Tom Irwin and Delroy Lindo.
