Steven Spielberg (1979)

12 Certificate

Our Score
Widely regarded as the one Steven Spielberg disaster, this sprawling comedy never deserved all the flak that was thrown at it. True, it's a messy, hysterical affair and many of the gags are strictly puerile. However, the sentimentality that mars many of Spielberg's more acclaimed works is nowhere to be seen, and there is a mischievous, anarchic edge to the story of how LA collapsed into chaos over fear of Japanese invasion following Pearl Harbor. There is also a winning lunacy to the sheer scale of the slapstick and Spielberg even finds time to send up the opening sequence of Jaws. Among the stand-out performers in the giant cast are John Belushi as a crazed pilot and Robert Stack as the Dumbo-loving army general.

Southern California is plunged into panic following the attack on Pearl Harbor. A group of American soldiers and a renegade air force pilot are caught up in the mayhem, unaware that a lost Japanese submarine crew are actually planning an attack - if they can find their way to Hollywood. Steven Spielberg's comedy, starring Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi and Christopher Lee.
