Review

Our Score
Michael Caine stars in this drama about an American widower living in Paris whose cycle of grief is interrupted when he meets Pauline (Clémence Poésy), a young woman with whom Matthew (Caine) has an instant connection. As the pair get to know each other, many dinners, arguments and reminiscences follow. But, with little in the way of development, the mood turns maudlin and this initially interesting liaison becomes increasingly static. There are tender moments recalling Matthew's lost love but they tend to make Poésy superfluous, the relationship between Pauline and Matthew serving only to underline what Matthew had with his wife (Jane Alexander). Despite a shaky American accent, Caine is as watchable as ever and the flashbacks with Matthew and his wife are heartbreaking at times. But, Caine's heart-rending flourish aside, this often mawkish drama struggles to make a point.
