Our Score
One of the best adaptations of Victor Hugo's classic tale of the misshapen Parisian bell-ringer and his ill-fated love for the gypsy girl Esmeralda. A brilliant and authentically literate script by John Gay is seized on with relish by Anthony Hopkins and Derek Jacobi (playing Quasimodo and Dom Claude Frollo respectively) who both give their difficult characters a warmth and sympathy beyond their tragic and villainous dimensions. Wonderful period production values are the icing on the cake in this lush made-for-television production.

The deformed bellringer of Notre Dame cathedral falls in love with a gypsy after her act of kindness toward him, and tries to protect her when she is accused of witchcraft. However, the hypocritical archdeacon of his church will stop at nothing to claim the girl for himself. Period drama based on Victor Hugo's novel, starring Anthony Hopkins, Derek Jacobi, Lesley-Anne Down and David Suchet.
