Audrey Tautou conjures the spirit of Audrey Hepburn in this frothy French farce that bears more than a passing resemblance to Breakfast at Tiffany's. The setting here is contemporary, but Pierre Salvadori's film certainly harks back to an earlier cinematic age when the French Riviera was really only for the elite and even gold-diggers had a bit of class. Tautou is the material girl on the make who is determined to snare a wealthy older man, while Gad Elmaleh is the humble barman she beds, after mistaking him for a wealthy hotel guest. He is immediately smitten but she soon dumps him, and his extravagant attempts to win her affections cause him to blow his life's savings, before deciding to do a bit of gold-digging of his own. Although Tautou is still a little too sweet to be entirely convincing as the temptress, Elmaleh is a deadpan delight as the unlikely gigolo, while Salvadori's direction luxuriates in the impossibly sumptuous surroundings.
Plot Summary
Romantic comedy starring Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh. Bartender Jean spends an evening with glamorous hotel guest Irène, but is left high and dry when she discovers he's not the man of means she took him to be. Instead of being put off by her gold-digging nature, Jean sets out to prove that he can win her heart, sacrificing everything he has in the process.
