Our Score
Hilary Swank is given a gutsy role as a real-life campaigner in this solid drama. She plays Betty Anne Waters, an unmarried working mum whose brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is imprisoned for murder. Believing him to be innocent, Waters then dedicates her life to learning to practise law in a bid to get him freed. Swank and Rockwell are as good as you'd expect as the chalk-and-cheese siblings, while there's dependable support from the likes of Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo and, in particular, Juliette Lewis. There's a whiff of "TV movie of the week" about this tale of one woman's crusade against injustice, but, like the similarly themed Erin Brockovich, there's also much to recommend it.

A single mother stands by her brother when he is convicted of a murder he swears he did not commit. Despite having little education, she works hard to fund putting herself through law school so she can use her skills to overturn the conviction, ultimately attracting the attention of a high-profile attorney. Fact-based drama, starring Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell and Minnie Driver.
