Our Score
This attempt to cement Hugh Grant's reputation as the Cary Grant of the 1990s, following the massive international success of Four Weddings and a Funeral, collapses under sentimental crudity. Grant stars as the child psychologist trying to come to terms with his fear of impending fatherhood when long-term girlfriend Julianne Moore announces she is pregnant. In fact, the movie's better known for Grant's off-screen performance with a Hollywood prostitute shortly before its release, which gave the film more publicity than it warranted. Moore has since gone on to realise her star potential in films such as Boogie Nights, The Hours and The End of the Affair, while Grant has helped to make Notting Hill, the follow-up to Four Weddings, a success. Robin Williams makes the most of a cameo as a manic Russian obstetrician, but he's only glimpsed twice, so it hardly matters. Like the film.

A child psychologist's well-ordered world begins to fall apart when his live-in girlfriend announces she is pregnant. Not fond of children anyway, he dreads the impact a baby will make on his life - and to make matters worse, their eccentric Russian obstetrician admits he has never delivered a baby before. Romantic comedy, starring Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore, Jeff Goldblum, Joan Cusack and Tom Arnold, with Robin Williams in a cameo role.
