Fanny is the second part of Marcel Pagnol's classic trilogy following the loves and losses of a Marseille port community.
The second instalment in Daniel Auteuil's remake of the classic Marcel Pagnol Marseille trilogy follows directly on from the ending of the simultaneously released Marius. Here the focus switches to Victoire Bélézy's eponymous shellfish stallholder, whose troubled relationship with bar owner's son Marius (Raphaël Personnaz) leaves her open to an offer from elsewhere and the promise of a marriage founded on security rather than love. Although it's possible to watch this as a standalone title, it gains more richness and emotional force when viewed after its predecessor, demonstrating Pagnol's deep understanding of the wrenching conflict between yearning desire and the moral conventions of the 1930s setting. Yes, it's theatrical in the sense that it's based on dialogue and character, but it's done with such expertise and affection it's quite irresistible, especially the play between Auteuil's crotchety patron and the very touching Bélézy's, who gives a performance full of youthful passion. Cesar, the concluding episode, is due for release in 2014.
