Our Score
Gladiator meets The Ten Commandments, or at least, that's the intention of director Ridley Scott with this inconsistent slog through the Old Testament. He gives the story a modern thriller edge and visually resplendent, high-end CGI in stunning crowd and battle scenes. But this grand-scale adventure lacks the awe of those pious epics of yesteryear thanks to laughable scripting and camp performances. Christian Bale is, however, a commanding presence as Moses who, after learning of his Hebrew slave roots, is exiled from Egypt by friend-turned-enemy King Ramses (an unconvincing Joel Edgerton in thick eyeliner) and meets God, controversially depicted as a petulant juvenile. Ten spectacular plagues and the Passover later, the new prophet leads his people to the Promised Land through a low-tide Red Sea. The excitement is dampened by a draggy middle where Moses gets married and a tedious epilogue, but Scott's keen ability to explain scripture miracles in credible terms is this biblical blockbuster's major asset.

Summary

When his brother refuses to comply, the kingdom is struck by a series of devastating plagues. Biblical epic, starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro.
