Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Marcel Pagnol's Marseille trilogy gets a fresh celluloid revamp thanks to actor-director Daniel Auteuil, who re-creates the city's old port in the 1930s to unfurl a tale of love, longing and the call of the sea. Pagnol himself, of course, wrote or directed the 1930s originals, classics of the French screen, but Auteuil brings the story to life for a new generation, while respecting the character-driven style of the originals. Old-fashioned this might be, but the material itself remains utterly charming, as barman's son Marius (Raphaël Personnaz) dreams of adventure while secretly carrying a torch for Fanny (Victoire Bélézy), the girl at the shellfish stall. The two young leads hold their own, though they're outshone by (a slightly portly) Auteuil himself, excelling as the lad's gruff old dad, and Jean-Pierre Darroussin, reliably splendid as a widowed sail-maker with romantic designs of his own. This hugely enjoyable combination of Mediterranean sun and wise humanity closes with a cliff-hanger, compelling you to see the simultaneously released second instalment, Fanny.
