Our Score
Twilight star Kristen Stewart seems ideally cast in this gloomy retelling of the Snow White story, but Charlize Theron makes a deeper impact as the queen who wants her dead for fear of being usurped. The queen's inability to come to terms with her fading beauty - and the power entwined with it - makes her an interesting, tragic figure, an idea overplayed in flashbacks to her childhood. Conversely, the love triangle between Snow White, the Huntsman who finds her in the woods (Chris Hemsworth) and the nobleman William (Sam Claflin) feels underdeveloped. There isn't any chemistry, either, between Stewart and the stony-faced Hemsworth. Making his debut, British director Rupert Sanders shows a more confident hand with the visuals, creating a sumptuous fairy-tale world, and the dwarves (including Ray Winstone and Ian McShane) add a welcome dash of humour. The overall look is seductively stormy, but looks are skin-deep - this is just a bit of fun dressed up as something more.

Summary

An evil queen learns that her reign will last for ever if she kills a princess, so sends a renowned warrior to find and murder her. However, he comes to realise his mistress's evil ways, and instead trains his intended victim to fight so they can bring the tyrant's rule to an end. Fantasy adventure, with Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron.
