Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Sylvester Stallone retires his ageing crew of mercenaries in favour of youthful hotshots in the third instalment of the macho franchise. Their mission is to capture a scenery-chewing Mel Gibson, playing a ruthless arms dealer who also happens to be "The Expendables'" co-founder. But when the new kids are captured, it's "the grey team" (including Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li) who come to the rescue. There's the usual winning mix of wisecracking banter, explosive combat mayhem with a take-no-prisoners attitude and jokey references to the action heroes' pasts, but there are also more than a few dull stretches of soldier-of-fortune soul-searching. The climactic duel is lame, too - despite being the most epic battle in the series so far - with a backdrop of mass destruction (with obvious use of CGI) that errs on the cheesy side. Fortunately, there are solid additions to the old fogey fight club (Wesley Snipes, Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer and Harrison Ford), with Antonio Banderas making the biggest impression as the over-excitable, too-talkative Galgo.
