Our Score
Four teenagers experience identical nightmares and are haunted by the shockingly popular supernatural fiend Freddy Krueger (known here as Fred), in this exciting and pioneering fright flick from director Wes Craven. Craven's ingenious merging of dreams with reality gives a markedly different horror jolt as Heather Langenkamp realises she can only save her friends from violent death by staying awake and keeping the razor-fingered maniac at bay. Bloody special effects and suspenseful murders disguise a somewhat weak script, but the engaging performances (look for Johnny Depp in his screen debut) and Craven's command of the chilling concept make it a top-flight terror classic that spawned seven sequels and a TV series.

Wes Craven's horror thriller stars Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, a child-murderer burned alive by the parents of his victims, who returns from the dead to terrorise unsuspecting teenagers in their dreams. Heather Langenkamp plays the unfortunate target of Freddy's attention, starring alongside Johnny Depp, John Saxon and Ronee Blakley.
