Review

Our Score
Something about this second-rate Truly Madly Deeply leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Based on Cecelia Ahern's novel, it stars Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler as Holly and Gerry - lovers who marry after a whirlwind romance. But their happiness is short-lived. Gerry dies of a terminal illness - but not before writing, for posthumous delivery, umpteen letters of guidance. These direct Holly, not just towards closure in their relationship, but also towards a new love. Such advice from beyond the grave is creepy enough. But Gerry's assumption that Holly's every mood and move can be predicted with complete accuracy is somewhat arrogant. It also means that, despite being adapted from a book written by a woman, this ropey if slickly made romantic comedy has an unpleasant chauvinistic overtone.

Summary

Widowed Holly feels she cannot cope following the death of her husband. However, on her birthday, she receives a letter he wrote to her just before he died, encouraging her to live life to the full rather than languish in sorrow. This is just the first in a series of messages, each one sending her on wild misadventures and helping her to move on. Romantic drama based on Cecelia Ahern's novel, starring Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Lisa Kudrow.
