Director Pawel Pawlikowski follows up his Bafta-winning Last Resort with this bewitching evocation of holiday romance, set in the Yorkshire Dales. The fact that the two lovers are both teenage girls seems almost incidental as tomboyish local Mona (Natalie Press) falls for the posh and cultured Tamsin (Emily Blunt), who's home from boarding school. Tamsin plays the cello, rides a horse and intoxicates Mona, whose grim vision of the future runs like this: "Get married, to a right bastard, churn out loads of kids with mental problems and then wait for menopause ... or cancer." Throw in some languorous lolling in long grass, a daring dip in a hillside pool and the first of the summer wine, and you have the perfect hormonally charged adolescent romance. The always impressive Paddy Considine adds a touch of unpredictability as Mona's ex-con brother. Loosely based on Helen Cross's novel, this is a grown-up film about coming of age and the passing of time that will probably make even the most jaded viewer come over all wistful.
