Our Score
Actor/director Raj Kapoor uses the flamboyance of Bollywood to tackle some meaty social issues in this lengthy, old-school hit set in rural India. A handsome but dated tale of forbidden romance, it stars Kapoor's son Rishi as a poor medical student who embarks on a moral battle against superstition, custom and the ultra-restrictive caste system, after falling for spoilt rich girl Padmini Kolhapure. Earnest looks, exaggerated acting and a surfeit of song and dance numbers follow, as the unnecessarily drawn-out events go from playful to increasingly tragic. Once Kolhapure's character is poignantly humbled, things become more interesting and allow Kapoor to pile on the melodrama to hammer home his messages about the abusive side of tradition.

Summary

A man returns to his home town after spending eight years studying in the city and immediately rekindles his love for a childhood friend, now a young widow. However, as the lowly nephew of a priest, he is forbidden from revealing his feelings for the upper-class woman. Romantic Indian musical drama, starring Rishi Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, Shammi Kapoor and Nanda.
