The worst bad guys the Earth has to offer are transported to another planet as prey in director Nimrod Antal's back-to-basics reboot of the invisible-alien-hunter franchise. Tenuously linked to the 1987 classic, and produced by fan-boy Robert Rodriguez, this human predator vs intergalactic predator battle royale is a serviceably solid sci-fi action thriller. Admittedly, there are few fresh tricks on display, or innovations in the design of the invisibility-cloaked, dreadlocked creatures. (Though notable additions include crazed survivor Laurence Fishburne, spiky CGI dogs used by the non-human hunters and a left-field serial-killer twist.) But despite the lack of visual originality, a crackling atmosphere of menace is well created and maintained, as the group of killers led by a buff Adrien Brody try to work out what's happening - or about to happen - to them. Which, as Alice Braga's impressive Israeli sniper alone seems to have worked out, will be very much trap-and-kill business as usual.
Plot Summary
Sci-fi action thriller starring Adrien Brody and featuring Laurence Fishburne. A disparate group of criminals and soldiers parachuted onto a strange jungle planet are embroiled in a fight for survival when they become the prey of unseen killers.
