NYPD blue turns a murky shade of grey in this wintry crime thriller about police corruption and family loyalty. After four officers are gunned down on duty, semi-retired police detective Ray Tierney (Edward Norton) returns to the front line but soon finds himself mired in a conspiracy that involves fellow policemen, including his brother-in-law Jimmy (Colin Farrell). Gavin O'Connor's film proves a competent addition to the cop thriller genre - without being particularly original. That's mainly because Norton and Farrell's good cop/bad cop pairing fails to spark and the screenplay's serious intent is quickly reduced to scenes in which characters shout at each other about ethics, in dark rooms. Some memorable diversion is offered by Farrell's rotten apple, a rogue cop whose idea of interrogating a suspect involves holding a hot iron over a baby's face. Like so much here, it's a scene that hovers somewhere between gritty and silly.
