Our Score
Cervantes's epic novel had already been adapted nine times before the exiled GW Pabst shot this rather stilted version with the great Russian vocalist Feodor Chaliapin. The supporting cast depended on which language you spoke: for example, George Robey played the English Sancho Panza, while Dorville was his French counterpart. But what matters here is the performance of Chaliapin, who occasionally exceeds his thespian limitations to produce moments of real pathos, most notably as he tilts at the famous windmills. Pabst is ill-served by song composer Jacques Ibert, but the cinematography is sublime.

A devoted mother returns from hospital with two baby boys, not knowing which is hers and which the child of a woman who died in childbirth. The baffled fathers agree to bring up the youngsters together, but fail to foresee the problems ahead. Asian drama, starring Arshad Warsi and Mukul Dev.
