Review

Our Score
Margaret Drabble adapted her novel The Millstone for this capable and well-made social drama. A young student (Sandy Dennis, in one of her most effective performances) loses her virginity and becomes pregnant. It may seem all rather dated now when viewed from the post-permissive 21st century, but the rest of the cast (Eleanor Bron, John Standing) is also strong, including Ian McKellen's sharp TV announcer, the unwitting father of the child.

Summary

Sixties kitchen sink drama, starring Sandy Dennis as a single mother determined to go it alone in spite of the social stigma and practical problems in her path. Based on Margaret Drabble's acclaimed novel The Millstone, also featuring Ian McKellen.
