A romantic comedy that brings together three disparate characters who are learning to face a challenging and often confusing world as they struggle together against a common demon: sex addiction.
There's plenty of sharing, but not enough caring in this edgy comedy drama directed and co-written by Stuart Blumberg, the co-writer of 2010 indie hit The Kids Are All Right. Mark Ruffalo plays Adam, a member of a support group for sex addicts who arrives at a crossroads in his life after meeting the girl of his dreams (Gwyneth Paltrow). Also part of the group is Josh Gad who gets a few cheap and easy laughs as an overweight sex fiend, but actually, his journey ends up being the most compelling as he strikes up a friendship with a loud-mouthed nymphomaniac (pop star Pink, credited here under her real name of Alecia Moore) who brings out his more caring side. However, the light-hearted approach means it's difficult to take the issues seriously and Blumberg never really gets to the root of this so-called disease. Not even a sombre turn from Tim Robbins, as the recovering alcoholic who chairs the group, can bring sufficient gravitas to proceedings. It works in fits and starts, and some scenes are boldly funny, but there's still an emotional void that Blumberg cannot fill.
