Our Score
This was another of director Stephen Frears's box-office failures, a movie originally released as Hero in the US. Clearly influenced by Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole, this underrated drama concerns a plane crash in which Geena Davis's TV reporter is saved by a mystery Good Samaritan - we know it's Dustin Hoffman, but when Andy Garcia claims to be the "Angel of Flight 104" he's swept up in the media hysteria. Sometimes funny, often deeply cynical and pessimistic, it's a clever and brave picture, with Hoffman recalling his Ratso Rizzo role from Midnight Cowboy. Meanwhile, Garcia plays a true slimeball to perfection and Davis convinces as the journalist puzzled by the truth.

A down-at-heel petty crook single-handedly rescues the survivors of a plane crash and then disappears, leaving a drifter to take all the credit and become a media star in the process. However, the phoney saviour starts to have a crisis of conscience, while the real hero is left languishing in jail. Comedy drama, starring Dustin Hoffman, Andy Garcia, Geena Davis, Joan Cusack and Kevin J O'Connor.
