Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen

Charles Vidor (1952)

U Certificate

Our Score
Danny Kaye turns in possibly his best screen performance in this sentimental Hollywood fabrication of the life of the great storyteller, a role that became identified with him. Children and adults alike will enjoy the superb Frank Loesser songs, notably the charming Inchworm, the unforgettable Ugly Duckling, and the rollicking Wonderful Copenhagen. A big hit in its day, it's worthwhile recalling the anti-Semitism that erupted in Scandinavia back in the 1950s over the Jewish Kaye playing Denmark's treasured raconteur. Nevertheless, the movie helped put Copenhagen and the Little Mermaid well and truly on the world's tourist map.

A children's storyteller is chased out of his small village to the Danish capital Copenhagen. At first daunted by the hustle and bustle, he soon overcomes his fear and falls in love with a ballerina. Musical, starring Danny Kaye, Zizi Jeanmaire and Farley Granger and featuring the songs Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, Wonderful Copenhagen and The Emperor's New Clothes.
